Co&Ca 2001-2011.  In celebration of our 10th anniversary: An Evening With Coheed and Cambria.  Spring 2011.  Full dates and details will be announced Monday, January 10th at 1pm EST.

Coheed and Cambria NYCIn 2005 Coheed and Cambria performed 4 “Evening With” shows at intimate venues.  It all kicked off in Chicago, Illinois on July 3rd at Metro.  The second was July 10th at Avalon in Hollywood, California.  The third “An Evening With Coheed and Cambria” concert was on July 22nd at Irving Plaza in New York City.  Finally there was one in Orlando, Florida at Hard Rock Cafe on August 9th, 2005.

New York City sold out in under a minute.  Cobalt and Calcium got a hold of a pair of tickets and in turn held a “scavenger hunt” contest giving members an opportunity to attend the epic event.  The evening was so intimate that there wasn’t even a barricade between the stage and the audience!  New York’s K-Rock 2 recorded the set and aired it on their streaming radio station.  The Hollywood show was also recorded and several of the songs were included on the bonus EP contained in Good Apollo I’m Burning Star IV, Vol. 1: From Fear Through The Eyes of Madness when purchased from Best Buy.  The Orlando performance was a shorter set and aired on MTV’s Nokia Live: Hard Rock Cafe on November 23rd, 2005.

During these shows Coheed and Cambria performed “Final Cut” for the first time in the United States.  They also performed “2113” for the first time, anywhere.  Additionally it was the first time many got a taste of the hit single, “Welcome Home” (which was tentatively titled “Kashmire” for its similarity to Led Zeppelin’s classic, “Kashmir”).  In Orlando, Coheed and Cambria performed ”Apollo I: The Writing Writer” for the second time (the first was 3 days prior at the free Central Park Summerstage concert in NYC).

The Evening With… shows were especially memorable due to the fact that there were absolutely no opening bands.  The shows were just Coheed and Cambria, starting the night off with a 5 song acoustic set (4 in Orlando) and finishing off with a 12 song set (6 in Orlando).

It looks like this announcement means that Coheed and Cambria will stop at several cities to perform their debut record, Second Stage Turbine Blade, along with current drummer- Chris Pennie.  One date has already been announced…  April 30th, 2011 at the House of Blues in Chicago, Illinois.

Travelinbeat bootlegged the NYC Evening With concert to share with those who could not attend.  The sets may be downloaded here.

John TheBaker and his band Instant Asshole live at Tankcrimes’ Brainsqueeze in Oakland, California this past weekend.

Looks like it was a hell of a time! Brainsqueeze was a 3 day independent festival that drew out 800-900 people each night! Hell yeah! DIY still reigns!

clip of (Great Uncle) John The Baker (Eppard) performing “Julian James” and “Crack Baby”  impromptu at theband3’s show August 28, 2010 at Bearsville Theater in Woodstock, NY.

It was crazy!  One minute I was catching up with John.  Next, he was spilling his guts all over the stage!  Those of us in attendance got the privilege of hearing an even longer set at Terrible Things’ Kingston Album Release show the next night!  Last chance before he heads back to California…  September 11th at The Basement in Kingston.

This man is awesome, for reals.

He’s a great performer and a really nice guy to Tweet at so everyone should go stalk him right now on Twitter [jtb666] ‘cause he deserves some love :)

John The Baker with Slimy Penis Breath - “Ladder of Pigs” - Fist Fuck The Pope

John Eppard will be returning to the East Coast (from the Bay Area, California) for a special benefit show on September 11th at The Basement in his hometown of Kingston, NY.  Details to come.

April 27th, 2006 Hudson Valley, New York’s Coheed and Cambria hit up San Jose State University Events Center in San Jose, California on their co-headlining tour with Avenged Sevenfold.  Co&Ca drummer, Josh Eppard, called up his Uncle John The Baker to let him know he’d be close by- approximately an hour and a half drive away from Richmond, California.  April 26th John Eppard hopped on his skateboard and began the 60+ mile trek south, to the other end of the San Francisco Bay.  John skated about 40 miles, before he had to call a friend to pick him up and bring him the rest of the way to the show.
Later that year after a show at Burnt Ramen Studios John set out to finish what he’d started that day- a long distance skate from Richmond to San Jose- along with 3 friends… at midnight.  3 hours deep, the group took a pit-stop in East Oakland to rest up for the remainder of the journey.  By the morning the fellowship was down to 3, but they skated on, for about 5 more hours, to Hayward.  At that point, the troop was knocked down to two- JTB and Jared Power.  Allegedly the third skater had called his mom to bring him home.  John and Jared, however, forged ahead about 10 more hours to Sunnyvale.
In May 2009 the two hooked up and skated with a few others from Richmond to San Jose hitting up and playing Instant Asshole shows along the way to raise money for Adaptive Action Sports and Local Hard Core Kids Scholarship program.  Dubbed, “Skate Til You Die!” after an Instant Asshole song (available only on 7”), John and Jared are going to do it again!!!
May 28th, 29th and 30th will be the second annual Skate Til You Die! benefit skate extravaganza… complete with live music every night!

Anyone who wants to join at any point of the passage can do so.  Here’s how it’s goin’ down…    The benefit will be kicked off 7:00 PM on Friday, May 28th, 2010 at Burnt Ramen Studios in Richmond with music from cht, Rhygin HC, Speed Wobbles, Follow Blindly, and John’s Instant Asshole.  Admission is $5 and there will be no age restriction. Around midnight, when the show ends, John, Jared, and whoever else will “get the show on the road” with a 3 hour midnight skate to the Instant Asshole house in East Oakland.
After a good night’s rest, the crew will skate about 8 hours to Fremont on Saturday, May 29th, 2010.  From there they’ll take a BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) train or be driven to Gilman Street in Berkeley.  The show will be at 924 Gilman and start 7:30pm.  The 24 year old all ages drug/alcohol/violence free DIY venue has been in the news lately because of an asinine recent rent spike.  The historic west coast safe-haven for punk rock is in danger of shutting its doors (and maybe even turning into a hipster clothing store - well, that’s what happened with east coast’s CBGB). There’s more info on the situation and what you can do to help keep the punk project alive in Berkeley here.  Oxnard’s classic punk band (one of the founders of “Nardcore” - not the legendary Bad Brains masterful guitarist) Dr. Know will be performing along with Instant Asshole as well as Minneapolis’ In Defence, and Bay Area reps Deadfall, Fix My Head.  Admission is $8.  Soon as the show ends, skaters have an hour and half skate back to East Oakland for sleepat the Instant Asshole house.
Sunday, May 30th, 2010 the skaters will get transported to Fremont where they’ll recommence rolling down to San Jose.  The near 6 hour skate will end at a venue/house to be announced.  I’ve seen this line-up posted around the web saying they’ll be at “Secret Generator Spot.”  Instant Asshole, Follow Blindly, Duck And Cover, We Must Dismantle All This! (Urbana, Illinois), Vigilante Death Squad, D.E.G., Rhygin HC, and San Jose’s Mental Disaster.
With the funds raised, Skate Til You Die! will be making a donation to The Melanoma Research Foundation in memory of Douglas Gillespie, a pioneer in extreme sports and in the development of sports recovery nutrition.  Another portion of the proceeds will go to their Skateparks That Rock Foundation, specifically for music at the infamous Skatopia.
You can participate in a number of ways.  Obviously you can sign up to skate any stretch or the length of the tested course (you can do it! Hell, John’s 47 and did the skate to Fremont from Richmond a few weeks ago).  You can sponsor a specific skater.  You can also donate flat out.

Skate Til You Die! day 2

Skate Til You Die 2

In the 1980s i was an anti nuke activist as well as an environmental activist. And in 1989 I was compelled to do more to save the giant redwood trees from extintion. My music evolution follows these same steps.

I had been a sucessful folk singer penning songs for Ceasar Chavez and Greenpeace and the Anti Nuke movement.  I was a fundraiser for The Big Green Initiative in california 1n 1989 1990 as i started to raise money for this initiative which stopped clearcutting on private lands I became informed that the timnber industry was increasing its logging because of the initiative.   They increased logging 4x !

That pissed me off and made me want to do more to stop the clear cutting because the law wasnt working fast enough.  I called a friend in Earth First and he said that other people were feeling the same way and that there was going to be a Mississippi Summer in the Redwoods this year.  So i began to organize.  I began more teaching seminars and did tons of grass roots organizing with my guitar.  I learned and wrote a bunch of songs by and for Earth First.  I was a manager of a fundraising team for the Big Green Initiative and I organized a bunch of people to join me in the redwoods that summer. The  main EF organizers, Judy Bari and Daryl Cherney,  were coming thru California to inform and motivate people to go to the redwoods that summer and they were stopping by my San Jose office to speak to my staff when i got a call from my Earth First friend.

“John”, he said. “Daryl and Judys car just got bombed on their way from Oakland to San Jose, they wont be coming to your office to speak they are in the hospital.”

Thats the day that changed my life.  Thats the day I realized I could get killed for doing this work.

Judys pelvis was fractured in several places amongs other damage from the explosion and Daryl made it thru with damage to his eye but didnt have to stay in the hospital.  He unfortunately was arrested for transporting explosives thru city limits.

We all knew this was a lie because Darly and Judy were on a informational fundraising tour and would never jeopardize that by transporting explosives.

We all felt that the Timber industry and FBI were incahoots to try and minimize the Redwood Summer actions by scaring away the masses of people expected to join in the protests that year.

I still brought 25 people in the woods to the actions that year for Redwood Summer.  We met Daryl Cherney and he and I played songs under a giant Oak tree outside the president of Pacific Lumbers residence.  The actions that summer were sucessful but only about 10,000 people came.

Later that year in November the Big Green Initiative was not passed.  And in Jan 1991 Bush started the first gulf war.  It was a depressing time. I started to get angrier and my music reflected that.

That summer 1991 I gave my car away and rode a bicycle across the country.   While riding  I started writing more aggressive songs.  I left california because TOO MANY PEOPLE IN CALIFORNIA was part of the problem and I wasnt born there so I thought i would leave and i didnt want to drive in a car (OIL WARS) so i rode a bike.

In Minnesota I was playing a show in Minneapolis at a vegan restaurant.   My songs didnt go over very good and I was kind of screaming at the audience.  I got a 3 page HATE LETTER from people in the audeince that night and I went home and wrote a song about it called Billy the Punk and vowed that to be my last folk song i would ever write.

When I got to New York my homestate in spring 1992 I was starting to writing punk songs, angry hardcore anthems for the freedom of the oppressed.  In 1993 I release the first John the Baker record called, “She Hates MY Music”.  In 1994 i started a punk band called Slimy Penis Breath and our first 7 shows were benefits for South African Shaman Credo Mutwa. And all these shows were aimed towards my nephews Joey and Josh Eppard who were young and coming up in the music world and dancing with major record labels and I wanted to show them you could rock BIG concerts without all the BS from the Muscic Industry suits.

And in fall of 1994 I was arrested for singing these songs on the village green in Woodstock NY.  I went to jail and then prooved the case against me unconstitutional.  I sued the Town of Woodstock for 1 million dollars and settled out of court in 1997 for $20,000.  I then shut down my bakery , made a record and went on tour.  Finally in 2000 I settled back in california and worked to set up and establish one of the worlds coolest punk rock venues Burnt Ramen Studios.

Currently still in Cali and close to Burnt Ramen I am employed as a carpenter and I restore old redwood houses so they are not bulldozed and sent to landfill.  It means a lot to me and the people who work for me to do something respectful for the Redwoods and to try to preserve their greatness even after they’ve been cut.

I still do not drive a car, I now use a skateboard as primary sourse of transportation and have founded SKATE TIL YOU DIE and annual fundraiser marathon 3 day skateboarding event to promote alternative transportation and raise money for good causes. May 28 29 30 2010 is the dates for this year.  People skate about 20 miles each day and we have a punk rock show each night and I play and skate all three days with my punk band Instant Asshole.
