On what would’ve been Joey Ramone’s 59th birthday, younger brother, Mickey Leigh is yet again throwing the annual birthday bash in celebration of the punk rock icon’s life and work as well as to raise money for Lymphoma Research (the disease that JR lost a seven year battle to in April 2001).

This event has been held since 2001 - originally scheduled as the artist’s 50th birthday celebration.  This year the concert will be headlined by H.R. (vocalist of Bad Brains) and his band, Human Rights.

Jesse Malin & The St. Marks Social will also be performing this year.  So will New York’s Morningwood (featuring Will Tendy).  Additional performers include: Sic F*cks, The Independents, Spanking Charlene, Heap.

Keeping in the NYC spirit, the Joey Ramone Birthday Bash will have an official after party.  Until 4AM everyone (21 and over) is invited to The Belmont Lounge on 117 East 15th Street between Park Avenue & Irving Plaza, with no cover charge.  Killcode, Panzie, Patti Rothberg and Karen Curious will be performing their renditions of Ramones songs and DJ Oki will be spinning punk music all night long.

There will also be a silent auction held.  Net profits will be donated to Lymphoma research.  Some of the items that will be up are

  • Cyndi Lauper signed Barbie Doll
  • New York Dolls book and poster signed by photographer Bob Gruen
  • signed Rock Junket book and 2 tickets for the rock and roll walking tour
  • Michael H Rock Punk Couture Handmade Jeans (3 pair)
  • Billy The Artist signed painting
  • signed Blank Generation DVD donated by filmmaker Amos Poe
  • “I Love Dick” t-shirt and book signed by The Dictators’ Dick Manitoba
  • Houndstooth Pub $50 gift certificate
  • Stitch Bar $50 gift certificate
  • CBGB’s gift certificate
  • St. Marks Bookstore gift certificate
  • Trash & Vaudeville gift certificate

The B52s and Dropkick Murphys are also expected to contribute items to auction off.

Before Revisions, the Eppard Brothers live duo, the Progressive Nation Tour, 3 Nights of 3, percussionist Joe Stote’s departure…  there was Pieces of 3.

3 had just returned from a long year of touring in support of their first full Metal Blade release The End is Begun (when the band initially signed to MB in 2005 Wake Pig was rereleased with 2 bonus songs- “One Way Town” and “Circus Without Clowns.”)  They hit North America hard with British progressive rock greats Porcupine Tree and also the German hard rock legends Scorpions.  Before 2007 came to a close, 3’s music video “All That Remains” was voted into the top 20 of MTV Headbanger’s Ball’s music videos of the year!

For this show… Joey Eppard, Daniel Grimsland, Billy Riker and Gartdrumm kicked it at home for a fun, anything goes-kinda gig, performing songs that don’t usually see the light of day.  Prior to the above video- Joey, Billy and Gartdrumm performed some covers and Geez Louise material with Tom Benton (who founded Planet Noise Records to put out 3’s Paint By Number. Half Life, Summercamp Nightmare and Wake Pig were also released on the label before 3 got picked up by Metal Blade.  Planet Noise Records put out Joey Eppard’s solo album, Been to the Future as well.  Tom Benton now owns and operates the Tom Benton School of Music / Planet Noise Music store in Woodstock.  Joey gives guitar lessons at that location on Sundays).  Joey entertained the crowd with a few solo songs before his current bandmates joined him on stage.

Enjoy the set!  It would’ve gone on longer had the kick drum head not fallen apart.  Well, that’s what happens when you let Josh Eppard use your kit!
